Expert Kitchen Remodeling in San Jose — Call Now
Nine weeks of washing dishes in the bathtub. Cabinets delivered in the wrong finish. The countertop fabricator cannot template until the cabinets are set; the cabinets cannot go in until the electrical passes; and the electrician stopped answering after he cashed the check.
Kitchens fail on sequence, not on taste. We order the long-lead items before demolition, stack the trades in the right order, and get your kitchen back in weeks instead of seasons.

What Does a San Jose Kitchen Remodel Include?

A kitchen remodel includes demolition, plumbing and electrical updates, cabinet installation, countertop fabrication, backsplash tile, flooring, lighting, and appliance hookup. Legend Improvement & Remodeling handles design, City of San Jose permits, and structural work such as load-bearing wall removal under one contract. Most San Jose kitchen remodels take four to eight weeks of construction and cost between $40,000 and $90,000.
Why San Jose Homeowners Choose Us
- We order before we demo. Semi-custom cabinets run six to twelve weeks and custom runs longer. We confirm delivery dates before a single cabinet comes off the wall.
- We sequence correctly. Rough plumbing and electrical pass one inspection together, then drywall, then cabinets, then countertop templating against real boxes rather than a drawing.
- We size the electrical properly. Current code requires dedicated small appliance circuits, GFCI protection at counters, separate circuits for dishwasher and disposal, and receptacles at island ends. Older San Jose homes rarely have any of it.
- We handle the permits. Filed with the City of San Jose, inspections scheduled and attended, final card delivered to you.
- We price in line items. Cabinets, counters, tile, appliances, labor, permits, and disposal appear separately so you can trade one upgrade for another and see the cost.
- Licensed, bonded, and insured, with general liability and workers' compensation coverage.

Kitchen Challenges in San Jose Homes
What sits behind your kitchen wall depends on when your neighborhood was built. Knowing that in advance is the difference between a four-week job and a four-month one.

Postwar Ranch Kitchens
Cambrian, Blossom Valley, Berryessa, and much of East and West San Jose filled in between the 1950s and 1970s. These kitchens sit walled off from the living space, and opening that wall is the most requested kitchen project we take on here. Original panels usually cannot carry a modern appliance package, so a panel upgrade often comes with the job.
Pre-War Kitchens in Willow Glen and the Rose Garden
Bungalows and Craftsman homes from the 1900s through the 1940s hide knob-and-tube wiring, galvanized supply lines, and cast iron drains. All of it has to come out before anything cosmetic goes in. These kitchens are also small by modern standards, so layout work matters more than finish selection.
Eichler and Midcentury Modern Kitchens
Post-and-beam framing, flat roofs, and radiant heating tubing embedded in the concrete slab change everything about how a kitchen gets rebuilt. Relocating a sink drain or a gas line in a radiant slab requires scanning before anyone cuts concrete. We plan the layout around the slab rather than fighting it.
Builder-Grade Kitchens in Newer Neighborhoods
Evergreen, Silver Creek, Almaden Valley, and Communications Hill homes from the 1980s through the 2000s have sound structure and dated finishes. The work here is replacing builder compromises, enlarging islands, improving lighting, and upgrading to the appliance package the house was never specified for.
Our Process
Free In-Home Consultation
We measure, check panel capacity, locate existing plumbing and gas, and determine whether the wall you want gone is carrying load.
Design and Layout
Clearances come before finishes. Walkways need at least 36 inches, work aisles 42 inches for one cook or 48 for two, and counters sit at 36 inches. Getting this right determines whether the room works for twenty years.
Written Estimate and Selections
Itemized scope, line-item pricing, milestone payments, and a construction calendar. We finalize cabinets, counters, tile, hardware, and appliance models before ordering.
Permits and Ordering
We file with the City of San Jose and manage plan check. Load-bearing removals get stamped engineering. Long-lead items go on order immediately.
Demolition and Structural Work
Cabinets, counters, flooring, and drywall come out, then framing changes, subfloor leveling, and soffit removal.
Rough Trades and Inspection
Plumbing, electrical, and gas go in together and pass one inspection before anything closes up.
Finish and Walkthrough
Drywall, paint, cabinets, countertop templating and install, backsplash, flooring, appliance hookup, and hardware. Then a walkthrough, a written punch list, and every item completed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Most San Jose kitchen remodels run $40,000 to $90,000 depending on cabinet quality, countertop material, and whether the layout changes. A cosmetic refresh with refaced cabinets and new counters can start around $25,000. Custom cabinetry with premium appliances runs above $100,000. Removing a load-bearing wall adds roughly $5,000 to $14,000 including engineering and permits. Your written estimate is free.
Four to eight weeks of construction, plus two to six weeks beforehand for design, selections, permitting, and ordering. Cabinets drive the calendar, with semi-custom lines running six to twelve weeks from order to delivery. Countertop fabrication adds one to two weeks after cabinets are set, because the fabricator templates against installed boxes.
No. Water, gas, and power to the room get disconnected during construction. Most families set up a temporary kitchen in the garage or dining room with the refrigerator, a microwave, and a coffee maker, and we help plan that before demolition. Dust barriers keep debris out of the rest of the house.
Yes for most projects. Relocating plumbing, adding or altering circuits, running new gas lines, removing walls, and changing the footprint all require permits from the City of San Jose. Replacing cabinets and counters in the same layout without touching plumbing or electrical usually does not. We confirm your scope and handle the filing.
Reface when the boxes are solid, square, and laid out the way you want, which costs roughly half of new cabinetry. Replace when the boxes are particleboard and sagging, when there is water damage, or when you want a different layout. Refacing a poor layout preserves the poor layout.
Usually yes. First we determine whether the wall carries load by checking the framing above.
Non-load-bearing walls come out quickly. Load-bearing walls need a structural engineer to size a beam and verify the load path to the foundation, plus a permit and inspections. We manage all of it.
